January 12, 2005: Doctors for Designated Driving is proud to announce our first retail store recipient, The Brown Jug of Alaska, of the Platinum Key of Life Award for fighting drunk driving through the promotion of designated driving. Brown Jug’s program, led by Ed O’Neill and O.C. Madden III, exemplify corporate citizenship, as well as the spirit of partnering for safety that Doctors for Designated Driving strives to highlight and promote. With respect to drunk driving,
The Brown Jug has made available to each of their consumers a Responsible Party Guide published by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. This party guide defines moderate drinking and encourages all party hosts and hostesses to ensure that designated drivers are available for their guests. They received these party guides free of charge from the Distilled Spirits Council and they will be on display at every one of their sixty registers. Doctors for Designated Driving brought the party guide’s availability to The Brown Jug’s attention. Additionally, Brown Jug employees utilize direct radio communication between stores to prevent sales to people clearly suffering from an alcohol use disorder, and to alert community patrols to possible drunk drivers.
In addition Brown Jug will be dropping cards into every one of their customers’ bags that let adults know how they can help prevent underage drinking. This is in keeping with Brown Jug’s revolutionary solution to help prevent underage drinking which involves the enforcement of a $1000 civil penalty against adults who supply youths with alcohol or against youth who attempt to purchase alcohol. The civil penalty can be reduced if the guilty party attends a 2 day alcohol education class, and victim impact panel. The funds collected through the enforcement of the civil penalty are used to pay bonuses to vigilant employees, who receive as much as $270 per minor. Since 1998, Brown Jug employees have seized 1200 ID’s from minors attempting to purchase. It is our hope that other states will follow in the lead of Brown Jug.
It is telling that in a conversation with MADD Alaska, they mentioned they were on their way to Brown Jug to give out their “Tie one on for Safety” ribbons to prevent drunk driving. A member of the Anchorage municipal government who is charged with the responsibility of helping Anchorage develop health promotion programs commented “Anchorage would be a better place to live if all retail liquor stores followed the lead of The Brown Jug.”
We salute Brown Jug for working to fight drunk driving, to fight underage drinking, and to promote and educate consumers concerning alcohol safety.
